encounters in history

Self-portrait as Amelie Bölte, 2005

I was sitting on the train, reading a book about the six wives of Henry VIII. And I suddenly had the idea to take photographs of these women. Impossible, of course. Or was it? And that was the beginning of the project „Imaginary-Historical Portraits“.

First, I discover the historic character, or better, she finds me. Then, I research biographies and stories, design and create costumes and props, look for appropriate models. Finally, the portraits are set in scene, in an interplay of tradition and imagination. Like contemporary paintings, the portraits are full of allusions, some are obvious, other details are more difficult to interpret, may even remain a mystery.
